I got some new canvas and paint last night. I have a mild headache right now. I won't take aspirin because I think the distant pain is due to some mental episode or something. I saw these two doctor-type ladies smoking outside their building yesterday afternoon so I did a quick sketch and then painted them when I got home from work. See the exact same painting at the exact same size along with four years worth of my artwork at: www.ChrisFrancz.com. Thank you, and have a nice day. Oh, 11" x 14" / canvas.

This started as a simple gesture drawing this afternoon. I got home from work around 8:30pm and put it on canvas. It's rather loose but that is what I was going for. See the preliminary / underpainting and lots more artwork at www.ChrisFrancz.com

The scanner was not kind to a few things that I added and I probably did them too small. See more at: www.ChrisFrancz.com

I did a painting last night. 8" x 10" acrylic on canvas. Not sure how I feel about it. I used the raw, unprimed side of the canvas because I like the texture but maybe it's not the best thing to do. Plus, the painting, which is from a photo that I took yesterday morning around 8am is kind of dark and no amount of fooling around with it in Photoshop neutralizes the harshness of the scanner. When I laid down in bed I had to kick out the jams and freestyle a sketch of an old lady that popped into my mind yesterday. I drew her as I saw her (in my mind). I don't know what it means. I had to draw her, so I did, then got out of bed (11:30pm) and fired up the computer and scanner so I could post it. Sometimes I see things (mostly people) and I feel compelled to draw them. Last week I was out with a friend (female) at a business expo. I saw this beautiful woman behind a booth. Most guys would look at her and think: "I gotta do her." All I thought about and told my friend was: "I want to draw her face, it's perfect." I could not even tell you anything about her body because I was captivated by her face. | EigoManga Screws Over Its People |
[Feb. 6th, 2006|06:31 pm] |
I would like to post a warning for artists about a company called eigoManga. EigoManga publishes two manga-style anthology books: Sakura Pakk and Rumble Pakk. While the company has enjoyed modest success with Rumble Pakk, Sakura Pakk has suffered from an astounding series of managerial errors. Many people may not be aware of this, but "By the Wayside" ran in Sakura Pakk for a short period of time. I was close with the book's editor, who always treated me well, but after she left I chose not to renew my contract when it expired. The fact that it was impossible to find the book in stores, that it was inexpertly printed and bound, and that, to date, none of the artists have received any money, contributed to my decision. It also missed two printing dates -- I couldn't even get the contributor copies I'd been promised for issues 3 and 4. For a long time, I heard nothing more from eigoManga -- I shipped a "By the Wayside" proposal to Girlamatic (where it was accepted) and moved on.
Yesterday I was contacted by Kelly Gammons, a fellow SP artist who drew a comic called "Babochka". Despite the fact that her contract expired months ago (she did not seek renewal, nor was renewal offered), Austin, the company founder, has been using "Babochka" artwork to promote the new version of "Sakura Pakk" that he is working on. Besides that, Austin has also been stealing work he never had any contractual rights to, whatsoever, from her DeviantArt website and using it as promotional material. Kelly sent a very plainly worded request to Austin asking him to discontinue his illegal use of her work. I've cut and pasted Austin's reponse to her, which he posted on his blog:
Austin: So Long Sakura Pakk Artist
One artist upted to leave the Sakura Pakk line-up this weekend. Yeah it did kinda bothered and I was willing to work with her demands but all of a sudden she got really forceful and stuff. That's uncalled for.
I wan't really a big fan of her comic but her pin-ups and visuals were awesome and they gave Sakura Pakk a very distinctive look from Rumble Pakk.
But with her attitude I'm ready to drop her and not look back.
I haven't really managed the Sakura Pakk artists but for now on I'm gonna do it because it's important for me to have a relationship with each and every artist I work with. I don't have a relationship with the Sakura Pakk but the former Sakura Pakk editor did(I knew this was a bad sign to begin with). When she left so did some of the artists. Not all artists are the same. I really like working with the business-minded artists (artisans) because they have some level of understanding of how the business of publishing works plus they are very easy to deal with. Things don't go as planned in eigoMANGA land... but at least I can explain to them the best I can and we figure things out together. I totally HATE HATE HATE dealing with just plain artists because they so stupid.... they only care about themselves, they are so freaking rigid in their practices and stuff that we have to walk on egg shells everytime we deal with them, they don't really care to learn some level of the business end of stuff, and so as a result they think that when things don't go their way they are getting screwed. Anyway for now on, I'm gonna deal directly with all manga artists that works with us... it's better that way. I'll look through submissions, give them updates, and anwser any individual questions they may have. It's not easy dealing with artists but it has to be done. In this business, the CEO should NOT have a hands-off approach in dealing with artists... because they are the fundation to everything... and we're everything for them.
I'm not gonna miss this particular artist and I look forward in putting a new comic in Sakura Pakk to replace her's. No matter how talented she is and stuff, for my own peace of mind, it's better to let her go.
As you can see, in between insulting Kelly's abilities as an artist and casting aspersions on her personality, Austin manages to play this so that he looks like the injured party. He cleverly excises the reason Kelly asked him to stop using her work. The insinuation that all of the previous Sakura Pakk artists were unprofessional is also quite maddening, as there is little truth in the statement. Let me stress that not one of the Sakura Pakk artists ever received any sort of payment for their work, and most were unable to obtain contributor copies.
Both Kelly and I agree that it is very important to get the word out that attempting to work with eigoManga only results in disappointment, at best and, at worst, theft of your work. As of 3pm today, the artwork she asked to be taken down is still on display.
This will be cross-posted. Please feel free to help me spread the word. |
